Chitthi Stationers

A letterpress studio in Jaipur wanted people to write letters again. We built a stationery range around the painted love letters of Rajput courts.

The brief

Chitthi prints on hand-fed letterpress machines that are older than the owners. They wanted a brand that made writing a letter feel like an occasion.

The approach

We based the range on the letters exchanged in Kishangarh paintings: folded, sealed and carried by a messenger. Every envelope has a painted liner and a wax-seal colour chosen for the season.

Bani Thani, the Kishangarh portrait of a woman in profile holding lotus buds
Unfinished drawing of a nobleman in a white turban
Royal boat party on Lake Gundalao
Pencil underdrawing of a rider on a rearing horse
Courtiers beside a waterfall, one holding a falcon
Women lighting fireworks on a palace terrace at night
Lovers meeting in a palace at night, inside a gold floral border
A woman bringing an offering to a blue ascetic by a fire
Courtiers gathered in a palace courtyard, lightly coloured drawing
Manuscript page of Devanagari verse with a pair of eyes at the top

The outcome

Their wedding invitation orders doubled in the first season.
