The Offering

The Offering

The brief

The Offering publishes long essays on India’s living crafts. The editors wanted a journal that felt calm and slow to read, in a market full of loud covers.

The approach

We built the page system on the proportions of a miniature painting, with wide margins that act like a painted border. Each cover carries a single figure and nothing else.

Bani Thani, the Kishangarh portrait of a woman in profile holding lotus buds
Unfinished drawing of a nobleman in a white turban
Royal boat party on Lake Gundalao
Pencil underdrawing of a rider on a rearing horse
Courtiers beside a waterfall, one holding a falcon
Women lighting fireworks on a palace terrace at night
Lovers meeting in a palace at night, inside a gold floral border
A woman bringing an offering to a blue ascetic by a fire
Courtiers gathered in a palace courtyard, lightly coloured drawing
Manuscript page of Devanagari verse with a pair of eyes at the top

The outcome

Issue one sold out its print run of 2,000 copies.
